About Us
In early 2026, a group of like-minded readers and community activists came together with an idea: what if Willimantic had a bookstore?
Together, we’ve worked to start something positive for Main Street: a space to access literature and community, a space to gather and read, or talk and discuss, or listen and share.
Our Mission
The Willimantic Book Joint makes a wide variety of reading material available to everyone for purchase.
Functioning on cooperative principles, we strive to promote reading, especially the reading of physical books; build a reading community and foster local culture; create an analogue space for the free exchange of ideas; and provide diverse intellectual opportunities for growth, discovery, empathy, and the pursuit of happiness.
Our Values
Community
Sharing stories and sharing spaces create connection. We're here for it.
Affordability
Books are for everyone. We make a love of reading accessible and affordable
COOPERATION
By working democratically, we can create belonging and shared ownership of the things we value.
CREATIVITY
We honor and support the spirit of human creativity and a culture of artistic expression.
INCLUSION
Books should provide "mirrors" and "windows" that allow everyone to see themselves and to see others in their community.
SOLIDARITY
Strong communities stand together. We are dedicated to standing up for our neighbors.
